Master of Arts Counseling and Guidance

Objectives:

To provide the student with knowledge and skill in psychological counseling.
To prepare the student for counseling positions in elementary and secondary school systems.

Master of Arts in Counseling and Guidance School Counseling Curriculum
Counseling 500 - Principles and Administration of Guidance Services
A study of current practices in development, organization, administration, and supervision of the various types of guidance services.

Counseling 505 - Analysis of the Individual
Prerequisite, Psychology 542. This course is designed to offer the student an orientation to psychological testing procedures, their evaluation, and use in the analysis of students.

Counseling 508 - Introduction to Counseling Theories
A detailed study of the best known schools of counseling theory, implemented by case studies in educational and vocational counseling.

Counseling 513 - Educational and Occupational Information
A study of the sources and the uses of educational and occupational information in the counseling program.

Counseling 516 - An Introduction to Group Processes
Prerequisite, Counseling 508. A course designed to acquaint the students with group and to lay foundations for leadership roles in human problem solving.

Counseling 529 - Cross-Cultural Counseling
Investigation of the development of cultural identity and techniques for appropriate interactions with clients from different cultural groups.

Counseling 532 - School Practicum
Prerequisite, Counseling 518 and an invitation from the Advisory committee. Supervised professional activity in the student's major field.

Psychology 510 - Human Growth and Development
An advanced seminar for the study of human growth.

Psychology 541 - Research Methods in Behavioral Sciences
Prerequisite, Psychology 542. A study of the research methods and designs commonly used in the Behavioral Sciences. Emphasis on quantitative methodology and APA writing style.

Psychology 542 - Statistical Methods in Behavioral Sciences
A study of the statistical methods used to study problems in behavioral sciences.

In addition to completing all course requirements, students must pass a comprehensive examination at the end of the program.

Admission Requirements
A satisfactory grade point average, a satisfactory GRE score, and a Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution are required. Admission may be conditional, provisional, or unconditional. Students entering this program are not required to be certified school teachers.

Residence Requirement
A minimum of 24 semester hours of graduate credit is required to be taken in residence.

Transfer Credit
A maximum of 9 semester hours of graduate credit may be transferred from other regionally accredited institutions, if the grades earned are "B" or better, and if the credit fulfills requirements for the MA degree. No correspondence credit is applicable toward the MA degree. Graduate transfer credit is normally limited to work completed within the past six years.

Grade Point Requirement
A cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on graduate credit pursued is required for the degree. Graduate status will be lost if the cumulative or quarterly grade point average falls below 3.0 for three consecutive quarters of matriculation. No grade lower than "C" will count toward the degree. Two "C's" will result in removal from the degree program, regardless of grade point average. Consideration for reinstatement by the College of Education Graduate Committee requires a written recommendation from the Department of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences.

Time Limit for the Degree
A time limit for the completion of all requirements for the master's degree has been set at 6 consecutive calendar years from the time of initial enrollment.
